Akela+ is built local-first. By default, all of your pack data — meeting agendas, templates, campouts, calendar events, ceremonies, activities, your pack profile, and your awards and scout roster — is stored only on your device, in a local database and your device's preferences. Until you choose to sign in, this data is not transmitted anywhere automatically, and we cannot see it.
There are four ways data can leave your device, each under your control:
These are described in the sections that follow.
Akela+ works fully without an account, and no sign-in is required to use the app. You can optionally create an account by signing in with Apple or Google — you'd do this to turn on cloud sync across your devices, to join a shared pack, or to submit and moderate content in the community library. When you sign in, we store a sign-in identifier from Apple or Google, your email address, and — if you choose to create one — a contributor profile (a public handle you choose and your private name).
Confirming you're an adult. Akela+ is for adults. The first time you use a feature that puts you in contact with other adults — creating or joining a shared pack, starting or sending a message, or submitting content to the community library — we ask you to confirm once that you are 18 or older. We record only that you confirmed, the wording you confirmed, and when. We do not ask for or store your date of birth or age.
We use all of this only to operate your account and these features. You can request deletion of your account and its associated data at any time — see our Account & Data Deletion page.
If you sign in, your pack data — meetings, templates, calendar events, campouts, activities, ceremonies, your pack profile, and any meeting previews you've published to families — is backed up to our cloud (hosted on Supabase) and synced to the other devices where you're signed in, so you can move between phones without losing your work. Your synced data is tied to your account and is used only to provide the backup and sync service; we do not sell it or use it for advertising.
Please note: a synced meeting includes its awards list, which may contain scout names, and a pack's scout roster is stored in the cloud rather than on your device. See Children's & Youth Privacy below — these are the two places where information about minors is involved, and both require signing in.
If you never sign in, no pack data is ever uploaded and Akela+ stays fully local. You can stop syncing by signing out, and you can remove your synced data by requesting account deletion.
You can create a pack and invite other adults to it, or join one with an invite code. A shared pack is how leaders in the same unit work from the same agendas, calendar, and plans. Everything in this section requires signing in.
What gets shared. Sharing is per item and off by default: a meeting, template, event, campout, activity, or ceremony is personal until you explicitly share it with a pack. Your pack profile is shared with the pack when you make a pack active. Items you keep personal are never visible to other members.
Your name in a pack. You can set how you appear to one pack — a display name and a role such as Cubmaster or Den Leader. This is visible to that pack's members only, is separate from your public community handle, and is entirely optional. If you set nothing, members see your community handle if you have one.
Dens. You can record which den or dens you're associated with, so conversations can be scoped to one den. This is recorded about you, the adult, and is kept separate from any den recorded for a scout — a den leader often has no child in the den they lead, and a parent with children in two dens belongs to both.
Scouts. A pack's leaders can keep a roster of the scouts in the pack. See Children's & Youth Privacy below for exactly what that holds, who can see it, and what it deliberately does not include.
Messages. Pack members can hold group conversations and post announcements. Messages are stored in our cloud so they can be delivered, and are readable by the participants of that conversation, by you, and — for safety and moderation — by pack leaders and our moderators where a message is reported or moderated. Deleting a message removes it from view for everyone. Leaving or being removed from a pack ends your access to that pack's conversations.
Event responses. If you RSVP to a pack event, your response is visible to the pack as part of the headcount.
Publishing to families. A leader can publish a redacted preview of a meeting to their pack — the date, place, an outline of the evening, and a note. Award lists, private notes, and presenter assignments are deliberately not part of a published preview and cannot be read by non-leader members.
Finding a pack. A pack is private and unlisted by default. A pack owner may choose to list their pack so that people can find it without an invite code. A listing shows only the unit number, town and state, and charter organization — never your meeting address, calendar, plans, member list, or messages. If you ask to join a listed pack, a leader sees your request, the name on your profile, and any short note you include, and must approve it before you can see anything.
Leaving. You can leave a pack at any time, and a pack owner can remove a member. Either way, access to everything shared with that pack — including its conversations — ends immediately. Items you had shared with the pack stay with the pack.
Akela+ includes a community content library where pack leaders can share ceremony scripts, meeting activities, meeting templates, and communication templates. If you choose to submit content, that content — along with the public handle from your contributor profile — is reviewed and then published to the shared library so other leaders can use and rate it, and any ratings you give are stored to help surface useful content. Content you submit is intended to be public and reusable by the community. If you delete your account, published content may be retained in anonymized form, with personal attribution removed, so the library stays intact for others; see our Account & Data Deletion page.
Akela+ has a few places to tell us something without signing in: an in-app feedback form for ideas and questions, and a way to report an error in a Guide to Safe Scouting summary. These send us only what you type plus the app version, and no account or identifier is attached. Please don't include personal details in them.
Akela+ offers optional AI polishing for your meeting communications (currently on iPhone). This runs on your device — the text you polish is processed locally and is not sent to us or to any third party.
To understand how Akela+ is used and where to improve it, the app sends anonymous usage events — such as screen views and actions like creating or completing a meeting, exporting a PDF, or importing a template. Each event includes only:
No names, email addresses, message contents, or pack data are ever included.
When the app encounters an unhandled error, it also sends a crash report to Sentry containing the stack trace, app version, platform, and a small set of yes/no flags about the app's state (for example, whether you were signed in, or whether a pack was active) that help us reproduce the problem. No names, email addresses, or pack content are included.
You can turn both analytics and crash reporting off at any time with the "Share anonymous usage data" toggle in the app's Settings; it is on by default.
Akela+ uses the following third-party services that receive data off your device:
Supabase — provides account authentication, cloud backup and sync of your pack data (when you sign in), shared packs and pack messaging, and the community content library, and processes anonymous usage analytics. Supabase also serves the app's bundled content library (ceremony scripts, activities, and event runbooks) on a read-only basis. Even read-only requests transmit your device's IP address to Supabase at the network level.
Apple and Google — when you choose to sign in, Apple or Google handles the sign-in and provides Akela+ with a sign-in identifier and your email address. Their handling of the sign-in is governed by their own privacy policies.
Sentry — receives crash reports (unhandled exceptions and stack traces) when the app encounters an error.
Anonymous analytics and crash reporting are subject to the "Share anonymous usage data" opt-out in Settings. We do not sell your data.
Akela+ is intended for adult pack leaders and parents (18 and older) and is not directed to children. Children do not have accounts in Akela+. A scout never signs in, is never messaged, and is never contacted through the app.
Akela+ does hold some information about scouts, because a pack-planning tool cannot do its job otherwise. There are exactly two places, and both are worth reading carefully.
A pack's leaders can keep a roster of the scouts in the pack. For each scout, Akela+ stores only:
That is the entire record. There is no date of birth, no full last name, no address, no phone number, no email address, and no photograph — and no field in which to put one. The one-letter limit is not a convention we ask ourselves to follow; it is enforced by the database, so a full surname cannot be stored however the app is used.
Who can see a scout:
Nobody else. Joining a pack does not show you a list of the pack's children — a parent sees their own children and no one else's. Only a leader can create a scout or link a guardian to one; a parent cannot claim a child themselves.
The roster is stored in our cloud rather than on one device, so that the leaders of a pack share one roster. It exists only inside a pack, and only for signed-in users.
The Awards feature lets a leader record which scout is receiving which award, including by importing names from a Scoutbook CSV. This is stored on the leader's device, and:
If you would rather this information never leave your device, don't sign in, or keep award details out of Akela+ and track them in Scoutbook.
Removing a scout from the roster deletes the record and its guardian links. Deleting a pack deletes its roster with it. Leaders remain responsible for handling youth information in accordance with their unit's and Scouting America's youth-protection and data policies.
Akela+ can generate PDFs and drafts — such as meeting agendas, welcome packets, and campout plans — and share them through your device's standard share sheet. Some of these, like a welcome packet or pack profile, may contain contact details such as leader names and email addresses. This content leaves your device only when you choose to export or share it, and once shared it is handled by whatever app or service you send it to.
Akela+ links out to third-party websites — such as the Scout Shop, the Guide to Safe Scouting, and other resources — which open in your browser. Those sites are governed by their own privacy policies, not this one.
This website (akelaplus.com) uses Netlify Forms to collect email addresses submitted through the "Get Notified" form. These addresses are used solely to notify you when the app launches. We do not sell, share, or use them for any other purpose. The website itself uses no analytics, tracking scripts, or advertising. You can request deletion of your email at any time by contacting info@akelaplus.com.
Some capabilities we're still building — a parent experience that gives families their own view of the pack, pack messaging for families, and a community Canva template library — are not fully available yet. We describe the scout roster above because the app is capable of holding that information today, even though it is still being rolled out. We will update this policy before any new feature that changes how your data is handled launches.
As Akela+ evolves, we may revise this policy to reflect new features or practices. When we do, we'll update the "Effective date" above, and any significant changes will be reflected here.
